“There’s discretion, and then there’s…whatever this is.”
~Descartes

No one who knew Jay Serpentico as a child would have been surprised at the course his life would ultimately take. As a youth, he was fiercely independent, braggadocious, and self-interested, and these traits would continue to define him the rest of his life.  At school, he terrorized the other students and constantly found himself in altercations with his teachers, whose concerned communications with his apathetic parents did nothing to alter his behavior.

Despite his clear disregard for authority, Serpentico was determined to enlist in the Colonial Hegemony’s military upon reaching the age of eligibility, and his personality profile did not quite raise enough red flags to prevent his application from being accepted. Boot camp would finally manage to teach Serpentico a degree of restraint and discipline, but he still earned a reputation as a hotheaded rebel.

Disciplinary concerns aside, Serpentico proved to be an exceptionally capable soldier, ranking at the top of his unit in marksmanship and showing impressive levels of endurance and physical fitness. Furthermore, he scored extremely well on combat stress assessments. Military psychiatrists noticed an almost total lack of personal empathy in him, which, though concerning in many ways, did make him ideally suited for many active combat situations that would take a severe mental toll on others.

Serpentico was deployed to one of the deadliest theatres of combat: the desert planet Samrat. There, his squad was tasked to defend Mar Furtado, one of the Colonial Hegemony’s primary spaceports, from the ever present threat of raider attacks. He took to this assignment with great enthusiasm, going out of his way to rack up the highest raider body count he could manage. His superiors watched with growing concern as Serpentico showed ever worsening signs of overt bloodlust in his actions.

Eventually, Serpentico’s ruthlessness would be his undoing, as he gunned down a group of unarmed civilian dunerunners. Though he insisted that he had every reason to believe they were hostile raiders, investigations showed the attack had been entirely unprovoked. This act, combined with his track record of insubordination and aggressive tendencies, was enough to see Serpentico dishonorably discharged.

Serpentico’s career lost little momentum, however. He banded together a group of like-minded ex-soldiers on Samrat and formed a private security force called Cestus Company. Mercenaries in the truest sense of the word, Cestus Company took jobs for anyone willing to pay, most often serving as security contractors for Samrat’s various scientific research outposts and as hired corporate muscle for Exotech Industries’ mobile operations platforms. Occasionally, Cestus took jobs that brought them into direct conflict with the same Hegemony military forces Serpentico had once belonged to. Serpentico had no qualms whatsoever about working with the Hegemony’s rivals, like the Expansionary Coalition, and he gunned down Hegemony soldiers with the same sociopathic enthusiasm he felt for any other kill.

Serpentico thrived as a mercenary in ways he never could in the military. His autonomy was total, and he had the opportunity to put his lethal skills to use with far greater freedom. Cestus Company quickly earned a reputation as one of the most ruthlessly efficient mercenary companies in the colonies. Eventually, Serpentico grew bored of Samrat, returning to the Home System to put the ever-expanding forces of Cestus Company to work on Earth.

While much of Earth had healed from the devastation wrought by the Corsica Event, many places were still rampant with conflict born from economic desperation and government corruption. It was a mercenary’s buffet, and Cestus Company found their services in constant demand. The company grew ever more powerful and profitable as governments, corporations, and wealthy individuals sought their aid to end or instigate all manner of conflicts.

While Cestus Company remained a legitimate business on the surface, Serpentico had no qualms about taking illicit under-the-table jobs. He and a hand-picked elite crew gladly participated in assassinations, protection rackets, and heists on the side. Keeping their books clean and working anonymously, Serpentico nonetheless earned a reputation in the criminal underworld as a highly capable, dangerous man willing to do anything for anyone. In time, Serpentico’s most lucrative jobs would come in the form of shadow operations for Earth’s deadliest crime syndicates.

With his advanced skills, high self-confidence, and total lack of remorse, no job was too deadly or too dirty for Jay Serpentico. As long as it fattened his wallet and bloodied his knuckles, he was game for anything.
